The Government’s programme to control chlamydia infection in young people has not delivered value for money, the National Audit Office says.

An expert group convened by AstraTech UK (www.astratechuk.com) has published a new patient-oriented guideline on teaching clean intermittent catheterisation (CIC).

Adding testosterone gel to diet and exercise improves metabolic control in hypogonadic men with metabolic syndrome and newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes, say German investigators (J Andrology 2009;30:726–33).  

Doctors should consider the possibility of HIV infection in every patient, particularly when the diagnosis is unclear, according to the UK National Guidelines for HIV Testing. These guidelines are supported by a new resource pack, Tackling HIV Testing: increasing detection and diagnosis, produced by the Medical Foundation for AIDS and Sexual Health.  

The charity Prostate UK has launched a campaign to raise awareness about benign prostatic hypertrophy and to encourage men to seek medical advice for unexplained urinary symptoms rather than assuming they are a normal part of ageing. It also wants GPs to provide early treatment to minimise surgery and is campaigning for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to be included in the Quality Outcomes Framework.
